Massachusetts Rhode Island Senators Reed, Kerry and Kennedy sent a letter to the Secretary of Interior asking that the environmental impacts of the proposed Weaver’s Cove project be considered in the permitting process. Senator Reed, and Representatives Kennedy and Langevin sent a letter to the Commanding Officer of the U.S. Coast Guard expressing concerns about the security and limitations on use of Narragansett Bay posed by the Weaver’s Cove proposal. (Link to pdf of letter). Representative Barney Frank has accused officials of the U.S. Department of Interior and Weaver’s Cove partner Hess of collusion. Read the Fall River Herald report. Massachusetts Attorney General Thomas Reilly and Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch filed a lawsuit asking the 1st US Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston to order federal transportation authorities to adopt siting standards for LNG terminals in an attempt to block construction of the proposed Weaver’s Cove LNG Terminal. Their request was rejected by the appeals court on November 28. (pdf of ProJo article or decision?). Rhode Island Bridge and Turnpike Authority passed a resolution in opposition to the proposed Weaver’s Cove LNG terminal citing safety and security issues of moving large amounts of LNG through coastal waters, economic drain of having to stop bridge traffic, and safety concerns of causing delays of emergency vehicles.
